Incredibly, Pacifica has managed to pack these same amino acids into their Cosmic Hemp cleanser, at about 1/4 the price of the Holifrog cleanser. There, I highlighted Tashmoo’s impressive array of amino acids like arginine, serine, glycine, and valine, and the healing and wrinkle-smoothing properties these amino acids impart. I previously discussed Tashmoo in the cleanser section of my popular Cruelty-Free Alternatives to CeraVe post. If you’ve found yourself pining after the Holifrog Tashmoo cleanser, but balked at its price tag, Pacifica’s Cosmic Hemp face wash may be just what you need. The Cosmic Hemp Balancing Face Wash is the cleanser offering from this line. Pretty much all of the products in the line are well-formulated and feature hemp seed oil, which is an amazingly nourishing and non-comedogenic oil for the skin. I really quite like Pacifica’s whole Cosmic Hemp line, as sort of silly as the product design and marketing is. The Pacifica Sea Foam Complete Face Wash is a great option if you’re after that satisfying gel cleanser clean, but you want to make sure you’re not stripping your skin of its moisture in the process.
It manages to walk that fine line between being a highly effective gel cleanser while nonetheless being hydrating and soothing - in fact, I think it might walk that line even better than my beloved Youth to the People cleanser, which I love but which sometimes dries out people with drier skin. The Pacifica Sea Foam Complete Face Wash is a great all-around cleanser for pretty much anybody. Like many of Pacifica’s (in my opinion generally underrated) products, there is very little extraneous stuff in here: pretty much everything has a purpose. It does have coconut oil in it, but it is well-formulated and I do not find it comedogenic at all. This cleanser is effective but gentle, with skin-friendly coconut-based surfactants to cut through makeup, dirt and oil, and a handful of other lovely soothing and antioxidant ingredients like Vitamin C (as MAP), aloe, Vitamin E, panthenol, allantoin, etc. It is a clear gel cleanser with a really satisfying, thick gel consistency, and it smells like sweet (but not too sweet!) coconut. Many of them have been mentioned here before a few of them are affordable dupes of more expensive favorites. In this post, I’ll detail a few of my personal favorite affordable cruelty-free skincare options for every step of a standard regimen: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and a few other things too.
But it’s absolutely possible to produce affordable cruelty-free skincare products that are effective and pleasant to use besides. It’s much easier to produce $5 products if most of your product is cheap filler and you don’t care where your ingredients come from. It’s true that these will not be the very cheapest skincare options available, and there’s a good reason for that: quality, ethical ingredients cost more to acquire, even if you’re a big company buying on a massive scale.
While I’m sure it’s true that popular cruelty-free products on average cost more than their non-CF counterparts, thinking of going cruelty-free as a luxury is a really problematic assumption that both keeps people from making that choice and overlooks some really excellent affordable cruelty-free skincare options.
